We have over twenty-five years of teaching experience in ESL classrooms, so this course has been designed to scaffold and build on your knowledge step by step.

You need to critically think about what we have said at each stage and think about how this will be useful in your classroom.It is a comprehensive course and goes in-depth on areas such as classroom management, grammar, phonics for young learners and technology in the ESL classroom. We understand that every job and classroom will be different.

Some sections will be more useful to you than others, but it is crucial to complete each section. Take the end of unit tests and only move on when you are competent in the knowledge acquired. We have tried to give you a broad experience, so when you teach your first lesson, you will feel fully prepared. It is also a good idea to research different teaching methods to ad to your over all teaching ability. Below are the key areas we will be focusing on in this course:

TEFL Course Content:

Module 1 – Course Introduction: guidance on what to expect during the course and how to get the most out of it.

Module 2 – Learning Theory and how students learn: the various thinking’s on this through history and how these can be utilized in the classroom by teachers.

Module 3 – Planning and Preparation: the skills involved in selecting the educational aims and learning outcomes intended for a lesson and how best to achieve these. Lesson planning and practice are a crucial component of this module.

Module 4 – Lesson Presentation: the necessary skills in successfully engaging pupils in the learning experience. Focusing on the quality of instruction.

Module 5 – Lesson Management: the skills involved in managing and organizing the learning activities taking place during the lesson to maintain pupils’ attention, interest and involvement. We will examine class sizes and how this will affect your lesson management.

Module 6 – Grammar: A comprehensive review of grammar so you can be ready for any ESL classroom.

Module 7 – Breaking Lessons Down: how to teach reading, writing, speaking and vocabulary in an ESL classroom.

Module 8 – Classroom Climate: the skills required in establishing and maintaining positive attitudes and motivation by pupils towards the teaching. We will look at ideal classroom layouts here and how to make the best of resources at your disposal.

Module 9 – Discipline: the skills involved in maintaining good order and dealing with any pupil misbehaviour that occurs. Essential agreements with your students as well as rewards and motivations will be examined in this section.

Module 10 – Teaching Young Learners: a comprehensive guide to teaching in this energetic and popular job area. A complete guide to phonics teaching is included so you can be ready for any kindergarten or primary school

Module 11 – Phonics: a complete walkthrough of the essential system of phonics and how to teach it.

Module 12 – Assessing Pupils’ Progress: the skills involved in assessing pupils’ progress, covering both formative (i.e. intended to aid pupils’ further development) and summative (i.e. providing a record of attainment) purposes of assessment.

Module 13 – Reflection and Evaluation: the skills involved in evaluating one’s current teaching practice to improve future practice.

Module 14 – Starting your ESL teaching career: finding the perfect job, writing a CV and getting an interview, accepting offers. We will show all the services available to you from TEFLACE in this section.

Module 15 – Final Exam

Module 16 – Resources: making the most of our database and other online resources.
